Healthy Eyes: 5 Helpful Tips for Glasses Wearers

So many of us these days have vision problems are need to wear glasses or corrective lenses. A recent study revealed that as much as half of the population of the US is short sighted. I’m sure I certainly see a lot more children wearing glasses at school nowadays than there were when I was growing up. Given all of this it is becoming more and more important to look after your eyes properly and make sure your lifestyle isn’t making your vision worse. So I thought I’d share my top 5 tips for healthier eyes:

Get your eyesight checked regularly.

It is advisable to schedule a visit to your optician at least once every year as some vision problems can often go completely unnoticed until it is too late. Getting regular eye tests can prevent the need for costly corrective treatments in the future so make sure you always follow your optician’s advice - if they say you need prescription glasses, start wearing them straight away.

If you need glasses, always wear them!

It doesn’t matter whether you think they look good or not, if your optician has said you need glasses then you need them. Not wearing them can damage your eyes further and will usually only lead to you needing an even stronger prescription later. If you don’t like the way they look then shop around, there are hundreds of different frames available and there is sure to be something that will suit you.

Maintain a healthy diet for your eyes

Research has shown that certain vitamins and nutrients are beneficial to your eyesight, so making sure you eat a diet rich in vitamins A, C and E, folic acid, selenium and zinc could help prevent future vision problems. If your glasses prescription is very low (-0.25) it’s possible that your sight could even be corrected by changing to a diet rich in these nutrients.

Always protect your eyes fron the sun

It may sound obvious to say that UV rays can cause severe damage to your vision, yet hundreds of people still allow this to happen every year. Sunglasses are an absolute must when going out in the sun, whether you have eyesight problems or not. With an endless range of designer sunglasses on the market, it’s easy to find a pair that you like and that will give you the all-important protection you need.

Give them a break!

If you spend a lot of time at your computer, it’s important that you give your eyes regular breaks from looking at the screen. Just closing your eyes or focusing on a distant object for 10 seconds at least once an hour can make a really big difference and helps to prevent headaches and vision problems associated with prolonged use of a screen. Don’t forget these problems don’t just happen at work, the same applies to watching TV and playing video games too!

Lens Implants could mean no more glasses

It may sound like science fiction but more and more people are opting to bin their reading glasses in favour of having artificial plastic lens implants inserted into their eyes instead. The procedure is becoming increasingly popular, particularly amongst middle aged people wanting to avoid the possible onset of presbyopia, or the deterioration of sight related to age. It almost sounds too good to be true, surely if it really works it could be the end to all our worries about our eyesight?

The idea of having your natural lenses removed from your eyes and replaced with a small piece of plastic might not be one for the squeamish, but in fact the procedure does work surprisingly well. The number of patients opting for the surgery has doubled since 2004, with most people reporting that the implants have made a huge difference to their sight, often meaning they no longer need to wear their prescription glasses at all.

So how does it work? Well, the natural lenses in the eye can stiffen with age, losing their ability to bend and focus. The lens implant procedure removes the natural lens from the eye and replaces it with an Intraocular lens, which uses the muscles of the eye to mimic the natural lens movements and enhance the eye’s optical power. The procedure takes less than half an hour – the patient is given a local anaesthetic then a small incision is made to remove the old lens and insert the new one.

Lens implants as a preventative measure are not currently available on the NHS and the private procedure is not exactly cheap, usually costing somewhere between £2,500 and £3,000 per eye. But when you think about it, being able to see both near and far without being dependant on glasses, escape from the discomfort of wearing them, or even being able to wear stylish designer sunglasses without having to worry about buying prescription lenses could actually be worth it!

Computer games could help to prevent eye problems

After years of being told that video games are bad for your health and especially your eyes, a new study has proved that in fact playing some games may actually help improve your vision, and could even prevent you from needing glasses in the future. The study, conducted by the University of Rochester, demonstrates that regularly playing certain games can improve a person’s contrast sensitivity function, or their ability to be able to distinguish between different shades of grey. But can that really mean your eyesight has improved?

Shades of grey might not sound particularly ground-breaking, but contrast sensitivity is one of the most easily damaged functions of the eye. People who suffer from low contrast sensitivity find it harder to see at night or to pick out small details like spots on clothing, and often the only way to treat the problem is with increasing strength prescription glasses or eye surgery. It’s now believed that computer games could be used to train the eyes to develop these skills, and that it’s possible the same method could even be used to treat people who suffer from Amblyopia or ‘lazy eye’, a condition that affects the brain’s ability to correctly register signals from one eye.

But not all video games are thought to be beneficial in this way. The study compared different types of computer games by testing young adults who did not usually play games before and after a period of playing them regularly. The results of the tests revealed that subjects who played first-person shooter or action games like Call of Duty showed a 43 per cent improvement on average, whereas those who played non-action games such as The Sims 2 showed hardly any.

So if gaming could help us avoid eye problems should we all be rushing out to buy an XBOX with as many action games as we can find to ensure that our designer sunglasses will remain our only visual aids far into our future? Well, unfortunately no. For a start the study makes a point that not all action games will work like this, in other words, the majority of them probably won’t. Not to mention the fact that although these games may help develop some areas of your eyesight, it’s still not advisable to be sitting in front of a screen for long periods of time, or to allow computer games to replace other activities necessary to staying fit and healthy. In theory it’s a nice idea, but it’s important to remember that it’s just as possible that video games could well be harmful in other ways.

How To Find An Eye Surgery

Oftentimes, people look in the phone directory and simply call the first person on the list when looking for a good or service.  This is not typically a good idea.  While it’s probably fine if you just need someone to mow your lawn, it’s not a wise thing to do when you are searching for a doctor to do surgery on your eyes.

You will need to treat your search as something of high importance; after all, it’s crucial to find a qualified eye surgeon in your area.  Most people have no trouble getting referred to quality offices an hour or two outside their area – this is quite typical when searching for a doctor or surgeon.  But, it’s a far better idea to find a good provider nearby, so that you won’t need to waste so many hours on the road.

If you want to save yourself some time, you can check out our recommended best Omaha eye surgeon

Also, if there are any problems that occur such as infections or irritations after surgery then you will want that surgeon to be a hop, skip, and a jump away from you. So how does one search for a good eye surgeon? You already know that you simply cannot trust what the billboards say or what the local television commercials are telling you.

How much ad space a surgeon was able to afford in the yellow pages does not say how well they perform surgeries so go ahead and bounce that idea right out of your head. With all kidding aside, how do you tell the difference from a good surgeon from a bad surgeon when this is your first time?

Start by talking with friends, family, co-workers, and anyone else that you can in order to get personal references. If you are able to come across people who have had procedures done by local eye surgeons then you can learn a lot from their experiences. Finding these sources may be hard though depending on the amount of people in your local area that you know.

Maybe you simply feel uncomfortable about asking people about their medical background and treatments they have had. If that is the case then begin taking the names of the local surgeons and doing a little background search on them over the Internet. There is so much that can be learned online that it is amazing.

Don’t want to do the research?  Here is our recommended best Lincoln eye surgeon

It’s not hard at all to find information about malpractice lawsuits or ethics complaints against a specific surgeon.  Bad news makes the rounds quickly, so if this information is out there, you’ll most certainly find it.  Once you’ve narrowed your list of eye surgeons down to a few that are of interest to you, just set up an initial appointment with them.  This will provide you with a lot of information about the surgeon.

If you don’t have an easy rapport with the surgeon, there is no obligation to set a follow up appointment.  But, if you hit it off with the doctor, it’s a good idea to ask for a summary of their qualifications and few references.  An eye surgeon who won’t provide this information is probably bad news.  Just keep at it, and you’re bound the find the eye surgeon that’s a perfect fit for you.

Lasik Surgery

An alternitive to Lasik Surgery could be natural vision correction

Today more and more people are choosing Lasik Surgery as an option for improving their eyesight.  This may be a good option for you; but it’s always best to know your options, the risks, and anything else that might help you make this decision.

When considering your Lasik Surgery procedures here are some things to consider;

There is time needed for recovery-pain is a typical occurrence.  Most cases are mild to moderate pain.  This is often controlled by prescription pain medications in some cases.

The time you take to recover, may leave you with blurry vision; this can take a few days in some cases.  In older individuals, you may still need your glasses for a few days after surgery while you heal.

It may be good to know that it’s not always successful.  Sometimes, the procedure doesn’t work and you could regress back to the state you were before the surgery.  In this case it’s good to know your chances before proceeding.

Not a permanent fix; sometimes it lasts only for a time period.  As we get older the need to wear glasses or contact lenses may return.  Those over 40 will likely have this occur.

What should I do?

Talk to you doctor; this is a good place to start.  Make sure he/she informs you of all that it entails.  Don’t be sold on a sales pitch; you want a doctor who is going to benefit you, not look at you as the next payment on his car.

Research your options.  Knowledge is power-so it is said-you can feel better when you weigh the facts.  Get some concrete literature on the process, what it entails, anything that will give you a clear and unbiased and informative view of the procedure and what you as the patient can expect.

Talk to people; if you have questions, it may be of help to talk to people who’ve had it done.  Get some feedback.  Not all cases will be the same, so keep that in mind.  It is however, a good idea to know the facts, whether they’re good or bad.

Overall, the Lasik surgery process appears to be helping many people annually see things more clearly.  Although it’s not for everyone, if it’s something you are thinking about, get informed before you make the leap.  Be sure to ask questions even if they seem silly.  Your best source of information is your doctor, don’t be shy when asking questions, this is your sight, and it’s in his/her hands.  You have the right to know.

Talk to your doctor and do your research, then you will have a better idea of your options before you take this step in sight improvement.

Caring For Your Eyes

Many don’t consider all their eyes do for them, until they are in need of help.  With all they see and take in daily, it’s an endless collection of information and data.. However, what many fail to ’see’ is the need for great care.  The caring for the eyes is so specific; they have medical experts who are designated solely to keeping them well. Many just take our eyes and their vision for granted.  Vision isn’t just something you have; it is in fact more of a gift.  Millions of people have had to learn life changing skills due to losing their sight.  Often times, this is something that can be prevented.  With the right knowledge and attitude, you too can have long lasting healthy eyes and enjoyable sight.

Understanding what it is you can do to protect your eyes is a valuable tool.  Wearing protective eye wear for example is as sensible, as wearing steel toe boots on a work site.  When you are dealing with materials and things that can ultimately cause harm, even if it seems minimal risk, it’s always wisest to ensure their best chance.

If you have a child, you know that being in a car accident won’t happen every time you get in to the car, yet, you buckle your kids securely for the off chance something may bring them harm.  Your eyes deserve the same attention.  Knowing what you can do to protect them, and making them a part of your regular routine, will greatly improve the chances of your eyes being well.

One of the things you should consider is the use of good sunglass.  Sunglass with a UV protective barrier is essential.  Just as your skin can be harmed by the UV rays, your eyes are also being exposed to these damaging rays.  Not all sunglasses are equal.  Make sure they have the label on them, stating they are protected from the UV rays.  If in doubt about which sunglasses to buy, talk to your optician, he can recommend something for you and your family that will keep your baby blues sparkling and healthy.

Another thing to consider is the use of protective eye wear when doing activities involving tools.  Even a lawn mower can spit up debris and can cause irreparable harm to your eyes. A simple pair of safely glasses can be a great way to keep your eyes healthy.

Something simple to do for your eyes is make sure you give them time to rest.  Reading, watching t.v.,  and time on your computer can cause strain and fatigue to your eyes.  Giving them periodic rest periods is wise.  Don’t sit too close to the screen, make sure the light isn’t causing a glare or strain on your eyes.

Finally, one good thing you can do to ensure your eyes are healthy is by having your eyes checked regularly.  If there are problems with your eyes, early diagnosis can prevent later prognosis.

Just a few simple things you can do to keep your eyes seeing as they should; will be the best thing you can do for your eyes.
Your eyes are working for you, do what you can for them.

The Eyes Have It. They Are More Complex Than Any Computer In The World

The eye is made up of so many parts. Like a camera, what we see from the outside is only a simple picture to what lies beneath. The overall function and design of the eye is much more than just a white ping-pong sized ball with a colourful space and a little black dot. Your eye is the window to the world. It takes thousands of ‘calculations’ so to speak. What you see is only a small part of the overall picture. The following is a summary of each part and its function.

Check out our site for Vision Care

Part Description Function

Eye socket Hollow space/opening Holds and Supports the function of the eyeball itself

Eyelid Skin over eyeball This skin through muscular automatic and voluntarily movements. It acts in this capacity to help keep the eyeball moist and to keep it clean and free from debris.

Eyelashes Tiny hairs framing at the end of the eyelid. The lashes although decorative are there for much more than holding mascara. Lashes work to catch dirt and minimized it’s entrance to the eyeball.

Eyeball Ping-pong sized white part of the eye. The white part of the eye is made up of a tough material called sclera. It covers a huge part of the outer covering for the eye. The eye has noticeable tiny pink threads, (Blood Vessels) which deliver blood to the sclera.

Cornea Clear/Transparent dome. This dome sits in front of the coloured part of the eye. It help the eye focus as light passes through.

The Iris The Coloured Part. Controls how much light goes through the pupil

The Pupil The Little Black Dot Set in the center of the eye, the pupil is actually an opening into the inner parts, the size of this black dot is dependent on the amount of lights it’s exposed to.
When the dot is smaller, it’s due to brighter light, thereby minimizing the amount of light that enters. When it’s larger, this is due to a darker area, in opening, it allows more light in, so you can see a little better in the dark.

Anterior Chamber Not visible. The space between the cornea and the iris. The transparent fluid is there to nourish they eye.

Retina Not visible. Processes what the eye sees. It receives the signals or information which is sent to the brain for understanding.
Your retina is at the far back part of the eye that takes the light the eye receives and changes it into nerve signals so the brain can understand what the eye is seeing.
It uses cells called rods and cones to process light. In all there are about 120 million rods and 7 million cones per eye.

Lens Not visible. Like a camera, the lens processes and captures the image. It is held by fibers which are attached to muscles called ciliary muscles. It actually changes the size and shape of the lens.

Vitreous Body Not visible. This sits behind the lens, and forms two thirds of the eye’s volume and gives the eye its shape. It’s filled with a clear, jelly-like material called the vitreous humor.
Rods Not visible Works the processing of black, white, and shades of gray.

Cones Not visible. Work to process colour. They only see colours. They are most sensitive to one of three colours; red, green, or blue. Together they are able to differ what they see to form millions of other colours. Those without functioning cones experience colour blindness.

Optic Nerve Not visible. Acts as the messenger in the back part of your eye. It carries the information it sees to the brain for understanding.

Lachrymal Glands Tears. These glands produce tears for flushing foreign bodies from the eyes. This fluid is regulated by blinking.
Your eyes do so much; protect them and SEE how great they really are!!

Vision Therapy

Message

Vision Therapy can be the most important choice you make.  Become pro-active in your eye care  Natural Vision Therapy Will Improve Your Vision - Just See.

Eye glasses are worn mainly to correct vision that has weakened;  mostly due to age.  Although, glasses can be worn for other eye problems, age related weakness is one of the top reasons for wearing glasses.

Our vision can be a complicated process, and optical illusions are actually part of our everyday visual life, even though we do not realize it. Read about these eye illusions in the wiki encyclopedia (such as wikipedia.com) they have some good information about this topic.

Your eyes are obviously very important.  They are considered “organs” and you need to be very aware of any changes that occur.  Immediately go to an eye doctor.  Do not wait.

The eye needs a lot of attention and yet, we often tend to overlook the eyes in our daily health care.
-First: we need to go for our eye exams on a regular basis.  This is nothing to fool with. We will get an eye exam to see if we are nearsighted, farsighted or normal sighted.  The chart used is mostly the Snellen eye chart.

Also, the eye doctor will be able to see if we are harboring any hidden eye problems or eye diseases.  Also, an eye doctor can even spy other non optical related diseases through our eyes. Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine which deals with the diseases and surgery of the visual pathways, including the eye, brain, and areas surrounding the eye, such as the lacrimal system and eyelids.

No some eye problems like eye floaters can be very aggravating, but not serious to our sight.  Laser eye surgery is one way to correct our vision, but, not the only way.

Natural vision therapy has become very popular.  Like alternative medicine vision therapy has its place in our eye care; eye exercises should be a part of your daily life.

Dry eye is another eye problem.  Dry eyes can range from aggravating to serious.  Again, always check any eye condtions with your eye doctor.

Some other eye problems / eye diseases: strabismus, eye infections, amblyopia.
